Power to the pedal! How the Trek Super Commuter will electrify your cycling life

It happens every few weeks, that moment when I decided enough is enough. Between the price of gasoline, the inconvenience of finding parking in an urban metropolitan area Damn you alternate side parking rules and the ridiculous price of car insurance, making the leap and purchasing a bicycle is a pressure that keeps increasing. Sure, I had to pedal a bit. The watt battery and watt motor can go as many as miles before recharging. The battery takes hours to charge. The biggest challenges in the States are varying e-bike laws. That essentially makes them illegal despite the fact that the law is interpreted to imply pedal-assist bikes are legal. The laws differ from state to state but the benefits do not.

In early , with a payroll of five, Trek started manufacturing steel touring frames in Waterloo, Wisconsin, taking aim at the mid to high-end market dominated by Japanese and Italian made models. Later that same year Trek Bicycle was incorporated. In just a few years Trek had outgrown its original “red barn” manufacturing facility—a former carpet warehouse.

In Trek entered the steel road racing bike market, introducing the “Pro” line, including the and models, and in Trek built its first mountain bike , the The introduction of bonded aluminum to Trek’s production line proved very problematic for a company that had built itself on hand-brazed steel frames. Manufacturing ground to a halt as Trek worked to figure out how to build bonded frames in a production environment.

August 11, This is burley So, said Ross Rushin after 20 minutes of climbing during my first ever mountain bike ride. I’d never heard the word before, but if it means what I think it means — awesome, incredible, challenging, and down-right thrilling — then burley rocks my world.

Whether you’re a road racer, daily commuter, or mountain biker, the class of bicycles sets a high standard for performance and comfort. The bikes on this list are lighter, more maneuverable.

He quickly developed a reputation for building strong and light bicycle parts that were well worth their cost. The Drop Line post from Bontrager is an internally routed dropper seatpost perfect for riders from many different disciplines. The Drop Line is designed to fit into a seat tube with a The post has a keyed chassis to prevent rotation and uses a two-bolt rocker head with micro adjustments so riders can easily dial in their saddle tilt. The Drop Line uses a cable to actuate its air-sprung hydraulic cartridge, which provides riders with infinite adjustability.

You can purchase one at any Trek dealer. Installing the post was fairly straightforward after we internally routed the housing through our frame. The Drop Line cable is actually routed backwards, meaning the cable is clamped at the remote instead of at the post. This design allows riders to easily remove and reinstall the post. Out on the trails, the post operated well in ideal conditions and warmer weather.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made.

Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original.

Put simply, Bled is beautiful beyond words. Romantic and Timeless, come and seek your corner of paradise. There is much to keep you busy, but don’t rush too much, Bled isn’t the place for that.

There are so many trucks carrying timber, or wood chips on the roads, even the small Farm Roads. Two of them today, just as I was about to leave Texas. I will miss Texas, all of it! The roads were clean with wide shoulders, the land beautiful, and the people were some of the friendliest I have met on this trip. After only 30 miles into Louisiana I already recognize a difference — the roads are rougher with more litter on the shoulders.

The surface of the road makes a big difference to a cyclist, and I am not talking about potholes, or other road damage, just the surface. Riding on a smooth surface is — well, smooth. There is little resistance to the tires, and the ride requires less effort. Contrary, if the surface is rough, there is a lot of resistance working against the tires.

Sometimes with very rough surfaces, you feel how the resistance slows down the bike, consequently requiring more muscle input from the guy sitting on the saddle. This does not include all the road kill I encountered during the first miles — it is always sad to see a dead animal laying on the side of the road.

It is so surprising what people throw out of cars — you can literally find everything from household items to shoes, articles of clothing and certain items used to prevent pregnancy those that are commonly made from rubber.

By providing a boost to get up hills or give older bones and weary muscles a bit of a break, electric-assist bicycles make cycling a practical option for getting around by Jay Walljasper, AARP Livable Communities Comments: Humphrey rides an e-bike, which is a bicycle equipped with a small electric battery to boost his pedaling.

I still get a good work-out, but it’s smoother, which is important now since I got the pacemaker. I know I would not be riding nearly as much if I just had a regular bike. Humphrey, who got his first e-bike in , says he can ride about 75 miles before the bike needs a recharge, which is easily done by detaching the battery from the bicycle and plugging it into an outlet in his home or wherever he happens to be. Trek Bicycle Corporation is a bicycle and cycling product manufacturer and distributor under brand names Trek, Electra Bicycle Company, Gary Fisher, Bontrager, Diamant Bikes, Villiger Bikes and, until , LeMond Racing Cycles and Klein.

Here are some general comments from my own observations and from the collected experience of others. Lots of steel Trek bikes were made; most are not rare. However, virtually all steel Treks are quality riders and are valued as such. Vintage Treks with upgraded components are more valuable as riders, but this can decrease the value as a collector’s item. Top level Treks are considerably more collectable than lower level bikes.

Earlier Treks are more valuable as they generally are more rare. Now that the serial numbers are generally understood, one can verify the age of the frame. Condition is all important to collectability. A bike with original paint is more desirable to a collector than a repainted bike. Additionally, bikes with components as provided by the factory are more desirable to the collector. In the case of bikes originally bought as bare frames, the components should be period correct.

The early bikes were built with traditional frame building methods and therefore are more desirable to the collector in my view. This change from traditional methods to more automated methods was fairly gradual from to , but then increased. This began with lower level bikes but extended to mid level bikes later.
